Education and training support for young carers

Caring can have an impact on a young person’s school life and educational attainment and opportunities. Young carers report being late to class, struggling with homework, being distracted during the school day, being bullied and worrying about leaving the person they care for.

The Carers Support Centre work with schools and colleges as part of the Young Carers in Schools programme to ensure carers are understood and supported with their education and to achieve their ambitions. By raising awareness in staff and pupils, they help to reduce the stigmatism and get young carers the support they need. Some of the schools even have a peer support group for pupils who are young carers. For more information, visit their page Young carers in schools | Carers Support Centre. If you are, or know of a young carer, speak to the school or college’s safeguarding lead or young carer champion.
