Our Promises to children and young people in care

Our Promises are what young people in care can expect from the council. We call them Promises because we want you to know that it’s important to us that we keep them and that you get what you expect from our service.

Children and young people chose five main themes for the Promises:

  • Important people – Making sure we help you stay in contact with the people in your life you feel closest to
  • Being involved and listening - Making sure workers listen to you and involve you in decisions about your life and future
  • Having somewhere to live - Making sure you have somewhere safe to live
  • Helping me know about what I need – Helping you to develop your skills and resilience
  • Help to create a good future for me – By supporting your dreams and aspirations

The Promises include what you can expect from staff and what services you can expect as well. The Corporate Parenting Board is the group that makes sure we are keeping our Promises so each Promise is part of the group’s strategy and plans.

Listening to children and young people

Children and young people wanted to call these “Promises”, and not “Pledges”, because this word had more meaning for them.

There were lots of conversations with children, young people, and staff to set out the actions we will take to make sure we are keeping our Promises to our young people in care. These actions are put into a plan and the Corporate Parenting Board supervises the plan and how well the council are doing.

The Corporate Parenting Board is linked to the Teen Care Council and Experienced Panel in Care and will use that link to keep listening to what young people in care and leaving care think. The Board listens to these groups, answers their questions and provides updates at the start of every Board meeting. We will work with the young people to make sure the Promises we have made are the right ones.
