Learning to drive

Learning to drive is a skill which can give you freedom and independence, and one you will use throughout your life.  For information on the important facts to know before you begin, visit the GOV.UK site and search the driving and transport section.  You can also get more information about support available to drive in this article.

Support for disabled drivers and passengers

Blue Badge scheme

The Blue Badge scheme helps people with severe mobility problems access goods and services, by allowing them to park close to their destination.  The benefits include parking in disabled bays, fewer restrictions on time limits and being able to park on some single and double yellow lines. Even though it is a national scheme, blue badges are issued by local authorities. You can find out more about applying for a blue badge on the council’s website.

Motability scheme and other driving support

The Motability Scheme enables people to remain mobile by exchanging their mobility allowance to lease a new car, Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), scooter or powered wheelchair. You may be eligible to join the scheme if you are in receipt of a higher rate mobility allowance, for example if you are in receipt of the higher rate component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP).  This means that the higher rate mobility component of your PIP will be paid to Motability so that you can lease or buy a car through the scheme.

You may also be able to get help with the cost of driving lessons.  You can find out more about the Motability scheme and help with the cost of driving lessons on the Motability website

You can also apply for an exemption from paying vehicle (car) tax if you receive the enhanced mobility element of PIP.  You can find out more about vehicle tax exemption on the GOV.UK website.

Disabled Motoring UK supports disabled drivers, passengers and Blue Badge holders. You can find out more about what they do, including their Information, Advice and Guidance service on the Disabled Motoring UK website.
