Breakfast and after school clubs

Out of school clubs usually operate before or after school and/or in school holidays.

The clubs provide a safe and stimulating environment for children.  Activities may include sports, crafts, computer games and other activities appropriate for your child.  Clubs may be run privately or by a voluntary management committee.

Breakfast clubs and afterschool clubs

Breakfast clubs are open during term time before school and offer your child a nutritious breakfast.

After school clubs are usually open between 3pm and 6pm during term time.

Costs

Breakfast and afterschool clubs usually charge by the session.  Costs may vary depending on hours and activities provided.  Speak to the school or provider for details.

Registration and staffing qualifications

Out of school services must be registered with Ofsted if:

  • they cater for children less than eight years of age, and;
  • are open for more than two hours per day and for more than five days a year

The Ofsted registration certificate must be prominently displayed.

For all Ofsted registered clubs, staff are checked to ensure their suitability for the role. They will also have had a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.  At least 50% of the staff must be appropriately qualified.  There are also rules on ratios of staff to children, depending on the ages of the children catered for.

Things to think about when selecting an out of school club

Here is a list of things you may want to think about or ask when selecting a club for your child:

  • Will your child be able to cope in a large group out of school?
  • Will your child have space and quiet to complete

    any homework set?
  • Will your child need to attend for the whole holiday period?
  • Will the activities on offer suit your child?
  • Are you happy for your child to attend outings, especially if these cost extra?
  • Are you entitled to Working Tax Credit?
  • If they are registered with Ofsted, can you see a copy of the recent reports?
  • Can you see their insurance certificates?
  • How many staff work at the scheme?
  • Does the scheme operate every school holiday?
  • Do you provide for children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND)? (You can find out more information on support available for children with SEND in our Local Offer)
  • What days and hours do you operate?
  • What are the fees and how do I pay?
  • From which schools do you collect and how is this organised/supervised?
  • How is difficult behaviour managed?
  • How many children attend?
  • What age range do you cater for?
  • Do you provide snacks/meals and cater for special dietary needs?
  • What will happen if I am delayed in collecting my child?
  • What are the policies with regard to equal opportunities, settling-in and mealtimes?
