Support for caring for someone with mental health conditions

If you are caring for an adult with mental health needs, the primary way they can access support is via their GP. GPs have a variety of options depending on the level of need.

For those with low to moderate needs, GPs can prescribe medication or refer for talking therapy.  In South Gloucestershire, GPs can also access the support of a social prescriber who will find out what matters to the person and can link them into groups, organisations or events related to these interests.  These groups are many and varied and can help people connect with their local community and those with shared interests. This can have a very beneficial impact on people’s experience.

If the mental health needs are higher, the GP can refer the person for an assessment which will consider whether their needs require the support of secondary mental health services.  If a person begins working with secondary mental health services, then you, as their carer are entitled to an assessment of your needs. This will either be done by their care co-ordinator, or the Carers Support Centre.  Contact their care co-ordinator for more information or visit Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership’s carers pages.

If you would like support in your role as a carer you can also contact the Carer’s Support Centre who provide support, groups and information for carers in South Gloucestershire on 01179652200. They can also offer you a carers assessment, regardless of the support the person you care for is receiving.
